It’s no secret that our planet is in the midst of what scientists call the sixth mass extinction. Since 1900, approximately 69 mammal species and 400 other types of vertebrates, including the Yangtze river dolphin and the passenger pigeon, have disappeared from our planet. Of 12,914 evaluated plant species, 68 percent are in danger of becoming extinct. The loss of a species can impact ecosys- tems in ways we are only just beginning to under- stand.
The loss of a single species can have profound effects on other species, including humans. Case in point: bees, the sole pollinator for a wide variety of plants and a critical catalyst in global food produc- tion. Bees are suffering massive population losses due to the use of deadly pesticides. If bees were to become extinct, many popular foods would disappear—among them apples, tomatoes, and almonds. You will witness how we are working to protect bees while at the same time provide sustenance to local people.
Explore forests and farms that currently sustain thousands of local families, producing a diverse array of export-quality goods distributed worldwide. Under- stand the high-value timberland, a sector that consistently yields secure, long-term profits. Over the years, this industry has played a pivotal role in enabling investors to safeguard and enhance their wealth, providing a resilient asset that mitigates portfolio risks even in the face of economic shocks and market down- turns.
The Impact Investment Projects at Las Azucenas protect biodiversity through landscape management that helps conserve standing forests, rejuvenates degraded land, and protects rivers and streams. Our friends at Rainforest Alliance have trained more than 1 million farmers in methods that boost the productivity of the land, thereby preventing agricultural expansion and the destruction of vital forest habitat.
If you’re lucky, you may have the opportunity to meet conservation superhero José Román Carrera, who dedicated his life to protecting forests more than 25-years ago. Román traces his love for conservation to his childhood when he would walk more than three miles through the forest every day to get to school. “I saw macaws, deer, sometimes I would see a jaguar. He remembers. His work in protecting the Maya Biosphere Reserve will move you. José says, “If we want people and the planet to prosper together, we can’t get depressed. We don’t have time."
