Founder Story

Growing up in a Dominican household, Sherly, the founder of Hause of Curls, often heard her curly hair referred to as "pelo malo" or "bad hair." This cultural perception led to years of struggling with self-acceptance as she tried to conform to straight hair beauty standards. At 23, Sherly decided to stop relaxing her hair, and by 26, she fully embraced her natural curls.

In 2018, Sherly founded Hause of Curls to create apparel that represented curly-haired Latinas, a story often overlooked in mainstream media. The brand, with the tagline "Pelo Melo, where?" quickly became a movement, redefining beauty and challenging Eurocentric standards through inspiring messages, relatable apparel, and community events. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hause of Curls provided care packages to curly-haired nurses, showing a deep commitment to the community.

Today, Hause of Curls is a beacon of hope and empowerment, spreading the message that there are no "bad hair" days-only beautiful, natural curls. Sherly continues to inspire and uplift the Latina and bilingual natural hair community, helping them embrace their natural selves with pride and confidence.

Today you will see multiple aspects of Panama city. We will visit Panama Viejo, a historic site along the Pacific Ocean. Then we return to the charm- ing and colonial area of Casco Viejo. The Spanish architecture, red brick roads, and historic feel will have you pulling out your cameras before head- ing back to the hotel. You can enjoy lunch at one of the many local restau- rants. The evening is yours to enjoy.

After an early breakfast, we'll journey to the Chagres River, where traditional wooden canoes will carry us deep into the rainforest and into the heart of an Emberá village. The Emberá people are renowned for their vibrant attire, rhythmic dances, and intricate temporary tattoos made from natural fruit dyes – designs that can last up to 10 days.

We'll spend the afternoon connecting with the community, learning about their traditions, and enjoying their warm hospitality. A guided hike with local tribesmen will lead us to a nearby waterfall – the perfect spot to refresh and take in the beauty of the jungle.

As the day winds down, return to your hotel where the evening is open to relax and unwind at your own pace.

Get ready for Caribbean sunshine and one of the most memorable days of your journey, a celebration of Black culture, history, flavors, and joy. We'll begin in the city of Colón before heading an hour along the coast to Portobelo, where the echoes of the 1500s remain in its ancient Spanish fort ruins.

Here, history comes alive through local traditions: you'll enjoy a true Caribbean-style lunch, followed by the rhythm and energy of Congo dancing, a powerful expression of Afro-Panamanian heritage. Afterward, we'll make a meaningful stop to see the famous Black Christ of Portobelo, a spiritual symbol that draws pilgrims from across the country.

Our adventure continues as we board a boat to Isla Mamey, a small Caribbean gem where the coconut palms, clear waters, and island vibes will have you in full paradise mode. It's a long, adventure-packed day, so bring snacks for the road and get ready to soak up every moment.

In the evening, we'll return to Panama City for a special Farewell Dinner, where we'll celebrate the journey we've shared before saying our goodbyes.
