Depending on the arrival time, we will make a stop in San Salvador for a walking tour of the city, visiting its main attractions, including the Iglesia El Rosario. This enormous concrete church may appear non descript from the outside, but its architects have cleverly designed a spectacular arched roof covered entirely in fanned-out windows of colored stained glass, casting a rainbow of natural light onto the tiled floor. This unusual and abstract piece of art sharply contrasts with the colonial and classical architecture found elsewhere in the city, such as the grand National Palace.

EXPLORE & DISCOVER EL SALVADOR

El Salvador's Ruta de las Flores is a picturesque route comprising charming villages, each boasting distinctive colonial-era architecture. Intended for leisurely exploration, visitors can savor the local cuisine and ambiance. Ataco, our lodging destination, stands out for its vibrant street art adorning the town's buildings. Juayua, another key stop on the route, hosts a renowned weekend food festival, coinciding with our trip. The festival features numerous street food stalls offering delicacies like barbecued meats, prawns, and even fried frog skewers and guinea pigs. Dessert options abound, from ice cream to sweet buns paired with locally produced coffee.

Our day entails a journey along the Ruta de las Flores, pausing at various villages to experience their unique charm and indulge in delectable cuisine. Additionally, we'll likely visit the Cascadas de Don Juan in the morning for a refreshing swim before returning to our hotel in Ataco in the evening.

The Santa Ana volcano, standing at approximately 2300m, is the highest peak in El Salvador. Our camp- site sits at 1800m, and the ascent, starting with a moderate-grade hike through forests, takes roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes. As we ascend, the landscape transitions from lush overgrowth to barren terrain dominated by red-black volcanic rocks. After about an hour of hiking, we reach the summit, where we're rewarded with a breathtaking sight: the milky-green Llamatepec crater lake, set against the backdrop of black encircling rocks. From this vantage point, we can admire the neighboring Izalco volcano protruding from the valley, while the vast Coatepeque lake stretches to the east, surrounded by picturesque villages.

Later in the afternoon, we journey down the coast to La Libertad, renowned as one of the premier surfing destinations in the Americas. Our hotel, perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean, offers outdoor swimming pools and access to one of the area's striking black sand beaches.
